The sluggish economy is not the only serious problem Americans are facing in 2009. Our waistlines continue to expand and our weight is at dangerously high levels. Obesity (a BMI greater than 30) is a serious problem that is mainly attributed to poor eating habits and a sedentary lifestyle, though there are numerous deeper reasons why Americans are the fattest people on earth. Perhaps the more alarming statistics are seen in American children.
16% of all children in America ages 2-19 are considered overweight or obese. That represents roughly 9 million children. Of those 9 million, there is a 70% chance that they will be overweight adults. Are parents entirely to blame or is there a bigger influence?
The that have been so ceremoniously taken away. In an age where gym, art and music are viewed as a disposable means to budget problems, it is always the children who suffer.
Fortunately some schools have gotten the message. There is a movement to take away vending machines that harbor fatty sweets and schools are urging their students to eat healthy by giving them healthier choices. Limiting children's intake of fat, trans fat, sodium and sugar is an important step in fighting childhood obesity, but getting kids moving is just as important.
Some schools have implemented exercise time before the school day begins and have added after school fitness programs. These small steps do not have to rely on additional dollars for expensive equipment. Walking and running are free, while some programs can get by with less costly fitness gear such as burst resistant stability balls, hygienic mats, and resistant bands. All it really takes is a few interested adults to donate their time.
So in 2009 while America tries to stabilize the economy, lets help our kids stabilize their weight. Parents need to set a good example of healthy habits to their children and encourage their kids to get moving.
