What makes us want to do a thing? A good, balanced and consistent exercise program is critical to good health, yet because it is not absolutely necessary for survival (for most people) it often gets neglected. Granted; food, water and air are needed to stay alive. Since food costs money, we need to work. You might say we need that work is necessary also. What about exercise? For absolute survival I have to say probably not. With that thought in mind, exercise often gets put in the hobby, or "extra activities when I have time" category. Regardless of whether you feel exercise is a necessity or a luxury the benefits of an exercise program cannot be denied. It is "good stuff". In this article I want to provide some tips toward making our exercise program something that we want to do.

How do we keep up a regular exercise program? How do we continue to work out three or more times a week without getting tired of it and bored stiff? Even for those who treat exercise religiously it is easy to slip a day or two. Then before you know it a whole week has gone by. Do we want to exercise or do we view it as a menial task that we dread the thought of?

Think about what gives us motivation to do the things we do. Usually the hobbies we pursue are things that we are interested in or have fun doing. There are the keys, interesting and fun. I realize that some might say that exercise just is not fun. Granted, pounding the pavement for 30 minutes or doing floor exercises can be less than a riotous thrill. In order to make exercise easy for us to do and maintain, we have to make it interesting or fun. This is where we may need to use some creativity but let me offer a few suggestions.

  • One thing that has helped me in the past is when I keep track of what I have done. This way I can visually see the improvements made. For instance, when working out on the Total Gym I keep a short diary of what I do every day. Then when I repeat the same routine I can see improvements made. This is inspirational. Likewise if a person is a jogger, keeping track of how far and how fast can do the same. Or if a person is exercising to lose weight. What an inspiration when you see the pounds slowly falling off. And the best way to keep track of this is by writing it down and keeping a small notebook or something similar.
  • Another thing that has helped many people is by starting an exercise program with your children. This provides numerous benefits. It gives you time with your children doing something truly productive. It allows you to teach them how to do certain things. Likewise it can give them the chance to show you how to do exercises that are popular today that you may never have done. It also provides a great sense of accomplishment as you see your children growing in strength and confidence. Confidence is a thing that there is just not enough of in society today.
  • Exercising with your spouse or a friend can also provide a great amount of camaraderie that is hard to come by otherwise. When you are both pursuing the same general goal, even though you may be taking different paths to get there, it can stir the soul and help us to charge forward.
  • For some people, the use of a gym/Workout-facility is an excellent benefit.
  • There are many pieces of exercise equipment that can be bought for the home that do not cost a fortune. Some of these provide a great deal of fun, excitement and challenge to your exercise program. When you exercise at home you can always put the television, radio or CD right in front of you and watch or listen to whatever pleases you. I am very big on working out at home with my own equipment. In many cases a good piece of exercise equipment can be purchased for nearly the same cost, or is some cases less, than the cost of membership to a gym for a year. After a short period of time you can build up a nice home-gym which will definitely add to the interest and fun factor.

These are just a couple of ideas. There are many more. The key is to make your exercise program fun and interesting. When you do this, you will no longer approach exercise with trepidation and dismay, but rather you will look forward to it and enjoy it. And as we cultivate a balanced and consistent exercise program we will realize vast benefits.

It's kind of hard to ignore this Hip-Hop Tune since it is currently ranked at #4 on the Billboard's charts. What really sets it apart though is the inclusion of the song "Breakfast In America" written by Supertramp's Roger Hodgson. Oddly there doesn't seem to be any recognition of this fact from either the group or it's label. The Video of this song is very good.
